Fill-ins, subs, rookies come up big for FC Dallas |
In game where FC Dallas started three rookies and had five starters unavailable due to suspensions and injuries, Saturday night’s game with Toronto FC looked like one in which FCD’s 12-game unbeaten streak might be in jeopardy.
But those fill-ins performed well, and a 47th-minute goal by Jeff Cunningham in his first start since June 5 was the deciding blow in a 1-0 win. FCD have now won five straight at home and increased their undefeated run to 13 matches.

There wasn't much in way of sensational talking points in this scoreless finish between Toronto and MLS Cup winner Salt Lake that added a single point to the Reds' playoff cause. But the defining moments - as there were two of them - were a pair of shots blasted off the post by Salt Lake players in late stages of the game. If Toronto makes the playoffs by a point or on goal difference, the twin letoffs may be as responsible as anything else.
At the 82nd minute Salt Lake left back Chris Wingert weaved past Dan Gargan and unleashed a volley from 15 yards, looking to catch the near-side opening to Stefan Frei's goal. The ball thumped off the upright to the relief of 21,047 match and carnival goers as the game played on surrounded by the annual Canadian National Exhibition. Six minutes later, Canadian international Will Johnson caught the same post looking to beat Frei, the woodwork keeping the Royals from leaving BMO Field with all the jewels.

Mexican international Rafa Márquez opened his MLS account to kick off a 4-1 rout as the New York Red Bulls handed Toronto FC their first home loss of the year. The three valuable points picked up at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon put the 2nd-place Red Bulls three points behind the Columbus Crew and opened up a 8-point gap over 3rd-place TFC.
While the hometown Reds seemed determined on stopping highly touted French international Thierry Henry, a clinical finish by New York’s other designated player and some cruel misfortune helped the visitors gain a 2-0 halftime lead.

Offense sputters, but TFC remain positive |
Coming into a key showdown against the New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC knew they had their work cut out for them. They were facing a tough opponent on the road in a high-stakes game – a virtual six-pointer in the standings.
If that wasn’t enough, the defense had to contend with a world-class striker in French international Thierry Henry, who was making his home debut in a Red Bulls uniform.
In the end, though, it was a usual culprit – an anemic offense – that reared its ugly head to deny Toronto any points in a 1-0 loss Wednesday.

No place like home for TFC |
The proverbial saying "there’s no place like home” can apply in many situations.
Toronto FC would definitely be one of them.
After a harrowing trip to two countries and thousands of kilometers of travel, the team was at its dominating best back at their fortress BMO Field, downing Chivas USA 2-1 Saturday.
The win accomplished many things. It halted the clubs winless streak at three, provided some breathing room in the playoff chase and was an offensive breakout of sorts for a team that had scored more than one goal just once in its last eight MLS games.

What Happened To: Andy Welsh |
Our fourth installment of What Happened To looks back to first year Toronto FC midfielder Andy Welsh.
Andy was signed by Toronto FC in 2007 after failing to crack Sunderland's first team lineup. He scored his first goal for the Reds on May 16, 2007 and was named “Man of the Match” by Toronto FC fans.
After providing poor results in the following matches, Welsh found himself in and out of the lineup and on August 30, 2007 decided to sign a contract with Blackpool.
In 2008 Andy was released by Blackpool after appearing in 21 matches, used mostly as a substitute by “The Tangerines”. He then went on trial for the Football League One firm, Yeovil Town.
Yeovil Town signed Welsh till the end of the 2009 season and became a favourite amongst the fans. At the end of the 2009 campaign “The Glovers” extended Welsh's contract till the end of 2011. He is primarily being used off the bench but continues to be Yeovil Town's lead play creator.
